Known as “The Sunshine State,” Florida (FL) encompasses approximately 66,000 square miles of the southeastern United States. The state had a population of 18,801,310 in the 2010 U.S. Census, posting a 17.6 percent growth rate over 2000. Florida consists of a panhandle, part of which lies in the Central Time Zone, and a large peninsula that juts into the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the Straits of Florida. Florida is bordered on the north by Alabama and Georgia, while the Caribbean countries of the Bahamas and Cubaare nearby to the south and east.
